Flashback

I was looking for some vintage computer pictures on Google Images
when I ran across this
geek
The shaggy hair & sideburns, bad shirt with long pointy collar, digital watch. That really could have been a picture of me 25 years ago, it's uncanny just how close it is.
And that monochrome terminal with an acoustic coupler! What's that thing with the funny dial?

Pat Robertson - Top Idiot

Ya just can't make up stuff this stupid.........

Pat Robertson told his TV show that the town had turned its back on God.

"I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: If there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God, you just rejected Him from your city," Mr Robertson said on The 700 Club.

Bird Flu

Spotted this on Brian Bilbrey's site this morning.
Since I've been ranting about ID - Idiot Desire lately I can't resist reposting it.

SOME DON'T NEED VACCINE

Recent news about the avian flu virus has
raised concerns from main street to the White House.
There is the possibility, even likelihood, that
the virus will mutate into a form that can more
easily infect humans.

As the president pointed out, a vaccine cannot
be made until this evolution occurs.

This raises the concern that it may be impossible
to create enough vaccine fast enough to protect all
our citizens. But there is hope.

Gallup polls tell us that up to 45 percent of
Americans don't believe in evolution. Since
random mutation is the engine of evolution, these same
people must believe that the virus cannot mutate.

Therefore, there is no need to waste vaccine on folks
who believe there is no possible threat to themselves
-- thus leaving a sufficient supply for
the rest of us. Perhaps the president, given his
doubts about evolution, may wish to demonstrate his
leadership by foregoing vaccination.

This approach has added benefits. Polls also tell us
that disbelief in evolution is more pronounced among
the less educated, the poor and conservatives.
If the anti-evolutionists among these groups were to opt
out of vaccination then, through immediate deaths
and natural selection, we would reduce poverty,
raise educational attainment, and become a more
progressive society.

Devovlving in Kansas

ID - Intelligent Design - Idiot Desire is alive and well.......

In a hearing room packed with high school students, teachers and national media, the Kansas State Board of Education on a 6-4 vote approved a new set of science standards that question the veracity of evolution theory.

"This is a great day for education. This is one of the best things that we can do," said the Board of Education's chairman, Steve Abrams, who is on record as saying evolutionary theory is incompatible with the Bible's version of God's creation of life on Earth.

evolution+criticism/2100-11395_3-5940582.html

Hell, this clown even admits his problem is that evolution isn't the Biblical story. And ID isn't science.
Kansas became the laughting stock 6 years ago when it pulled the same stunt in the name of Creation Science. That school board was then voted out. The Christian right has once again gained control and is trying it again.

On the other hand the voters took control in Dover Penn. voted out eight of the current school board members.

DOVER, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - Voters on Tuesday ousted a Pennsylvania local school board that promoted an "intelligent-design" alternative to teaching evolution, and elected a new slate of candidates who promised to remove the concept from science classes.

The board of Dover Area School District in south-central Pennsylvania lost eight of its nine incumbents in an upset election that surprised even the challengers, who had been hoping for a bare majority to take control of the board.

The new board, which includes teachers, opposed the incumbents' policy of including intelligent design in science classes.

Now let's see if Kansas will wise up a second time.

Arnie Loses

I've not said much about yesterday's election beforehand. Yes, you're welcome. I voted No on all but the redistricting proposition and that was questionable as the politicians were the ones to select the panel of judges. Some said it would just be a bunch of old white men drawing the lines. So I should have a problem with that? (I prefer to think of myself as middle aged but hey I'm headed that way.)
Arnie thought he could just go around the democrats and get his way. That big melon of his may have shrunk a size of two (is that possible?). When Arnie got elected I predicted he would butt heads with the democratic legislature and have all his macho-take-charge-and-fix-things attitude get a dose of political reality.
The Terminator really doen't work as The Govenator.

If Topless, They'll Be Busted

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-topless5nov05,1,5956978.story?
coll=la-headlines-california&ctrack=1&cset=

SACRAMENTO — Topless women holding a protest may be ho-hum in San Francisco, but at the state Capitol, police say such a display could corrupt children, prompt drivers to veer off the road and cause sex offenders to run amok.

The California Highway Patrol has warned members of an organization called Breasts Not Bombs that if they dare to take their shirts off during a protest scheduled at the Capitol on Monday, they will be arrested and possibly forced to register with the state as sex offenders.

Yes that's right. The same breasts that feed a child could corrupt them.

"I don't think this is a matter of being prudish," said Nathan Barankin, a spokesman for the California attorney general's office, which is representing the state police in court. "The state Capitol is a unique venue open to everyone…. But it is not a forum for nudity."

No, no prudishness invloved.

State police say that when the group filed for a protest permit last month, there was no indication that Breasts Not Bombs was going to go topless. But the group's name made them suspicious.

"I decided to conduct some research," CHP Officer Keith Troy wrote in his court declaration. It's unclear what that research involved. But soon Troy called Glaser, who acknowledged that breasts would be bared.

Research! Probably went to a topless bar.

The state also said in its court filing that nudity would "create an immediate hazard to the general motoring public," expose picnicking children to indecency and present "a particularized danger to the public" because "sex offenders have been known to frequent" the park surrounding the Capitol.

Maybe the govenator will be there. Someone might get groped.

March of the Pigopolists

Digital Rights Management = Hell for consumers' fair use.
As if we need anymore proof that large corporations run this country and our so called representative.

FLUSHED with its success in defeating P2P pirates, the movie industry is lobbying to get senators to back a plan to ban on making digital copies of analogue recordings.

Called the "Analog Hole" bill, it will make anyone who makes a digital copy of a telly program or a film from an analogue signal into a pirate.
http://theinquirer.net/?article=27385

But they have no conscience anyway.........
THE MOVIE industry has sued a 67 year old man for $600,000 because his grandson downloaded four movies to a P2P site, iMesh.

The Motion Picture Association of America filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against Fred Lawrence, of Milwaukee.

Originally the MPAA sent a letter to the grandfather demanding he pay $4,000. Lawrence, who admits he is a little naïve about IT matters, said he couldnt afford $4,000. The MPAA upped the ante.

And Sony BMG borks your computer.......

The latest headache for security professionals has become a secret weapon in the battle between copyright owners and their customers.

This week, two research groups independently and separately reported that music giant Sony BMG has used software hiding techniques more commonly found in rootkits to prevent removal of the company's copy protection software. A rootkit is software that hides its presence on a computer while controlling critical system functions, and security professionals have lately warned that the addition of the technology to a variety of Internet threats - from bots to spyware - makes the malicious code more difficult to find and remove.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/03/secfocus_drm/

I don't advocate the copying copyright material except for personnal use, but let's be real here. These assholes are unable to see the damage they are doing to themselves by treating there own customers as criminals.

Write your Senators and let them know they represent consumers (and a hell of a lot more of them) and not just the RIAA and MPAA.
